Some studies have found that a bull during the breeding season may loose as much as one quarter of his total weight because of the excersions of the rut and the lack of time taken to eat and drink during this intense time of herding up cows. The biggest lose of elk usually comes during the winter, and a large portion of those loses tend to be bulls who go into the winter, under-weight and exhasted from the presceding breeding season.'))
